Gulangyu Island
The Gulangyu Island lies just a short distance from Xiamen's coastline and makes for an extremely popular day out. With many island attractions, highlights include cobbled lanes, period architecture, eateries of various descriptions, and particularly impressive views. The whole of Gulangyu Island is traffic-free, making it particularly pleasant to walk around. Look out for the dramatic Sunlight Rock and its cable car rides, the nearby Piano Garden and its unusual Piano Museum, and the imposing granite statue of Zheng Cheggong. Situated close to Gulangyu's ferry terminal, the Xiamen Underwater World is particularly popular and contains a host of marine and fish-related attractions, such as penguins, dolphins, sharks and seals.
Huli Hill Fort
Home to several interesting exhibitions, great views and imposing cannons, Xiamen's Huli Hill Fort is a fine example of China's coastal defence system of days gone by. Situated adjacent to the picturesque university, a range of unusual building materials were used in its construction, including sticky rice, clay, sand and camphor tree juice. Check out centuries-old weapons and the unique collection of exotic stones, which are amongst the main attractions showcased at Huli Hill Fort. On a clear day, you can see some of the nearby Taiwanese-ruled islands out across the water.
South Putuo Temple
South Putuo Temple is an ancient temple with great fame in Xiamen. It has the name of Southern Putuo for the reason of its main conformity to Guanyin and Bodhisattva as well as its location to the south of Putuo Mountain, one of the four great Buddhist fields in Zhoushan of Zhejiang province.
Southern Putuo temple has a grand scale with a total area of 25.8 hectares and a building area of 21270 square meters. Sitting on the principal axis from the south to the north are the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Precious Hall of Great Hero, the Hall of Great Mercy and the Buddhist Scripture Garret. There are annexes on both sides of the axis, such as corridors, Bell and Drum Towers, Haihui Hall, Puzhao Hall, Taixu library, classrooms of the Buddhist Institute, and so on. All these buildings are spread over a mountain slop of complicated topography with a generally solemn and magnificent atmosphere.

Nanjing Tulou
A tulou, or "earthen building", is a traditional communal residence in the Fujian province of Southern China, usually of a circular configuration surrounding a central shrine. These vernacular structures were occupied by clan groups. Although most tulou were of earthen construction, the definition "tulou" is a broadly descriptive label for a building type and does not indicate construction type. Some were constructed of cut granite or had substantial walls of fired brick. Most large-scale tulou seen today were built of a composite of earth, sand, and lime known as sanhetu rather than just earth.A total of 46 Fujian Tulou sites, including Chuxi tulou cluster, Tianluokeng tulou cluster, Hekeng tulou cluster, Gaobei tulou cluster, Dadi tulou cluster, Hongkeng tulou cluster, Yangxian lou, Huiyuan lou, Zhengfu lou and Hegui lou, have been inscribed in 2008 by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, as "exceptional examples of a building tradition and function exemplifying a particular type of communal living and defensive organization [in a] harmonious relationship with their environment".
Tianluokeng Tulou cluster
is tulou quintet cluster located at Fujian province, Zhangzhou City, Nanjing County, Shuyang Township, Tian Luo Keng Village (literally "Snail Pit" Village) in southern China, about four hours drive by motor coach or taxi from Xiamen, through winding and bumpy narrow mountain roads. It consists of five tulous with a square "Buyunlou" at the center, surrounded by three rotunda tulous and an oval tulou, forming a pattern of "four dishes and a soup". The five earth buildings at the Snail Pit village are:
The square Buyunlou (Reaching the Cloud building) at the center of the quincunx. It was the first tulou at this site, built in 1796. It is three storeys high, each storey has 26 rooms, four sets of stairs, and a go around corridor in front of the rooms at each level. The Buyun building was burnt down by bandits in 1936, rebuilt in 1953 according to the original plan.
Zigzag structure of Yuchanglou
Yuchanglou is a five-story tulou located at Nangjing county Shuyang district Xiabanliao village. It was built in 1308 Yuan dynasty by the Liu family clan. It is one of the oldest and tallest tulou in China. Yuchanglou has been nicknamed the "zigzag building", because the vertical wooden post structure is not straight and perpendicular, but zigzags left and right. It was built that way due to an error measuring the building materials. But in spite of this apparent infirmity, this tall tulou withstood 700 hundred years of natural elements and social turmoil. Yuchanglou's outer ring is 36 m in diameter and boasts five stories, with 50 rooms on each floor.
Each of the 25 kitchens on the ground floor at the back half of the circle has a private water well beside its stove. This is the only tulou in all Fujian with such convenient water supply.
Taxia Village
Taxia Village is located at Shuyang Town, Nanjing County and borders upon Yongding County in the west. It is about 1 kilometer away from Tianluokeng Hakka Tulou Cluster. There are 47 Tulou located in Taxia village, which covers only 1 square kilometer. They are square, round, apron-shaped and carpenter`s square-shaped and form a grand Tulou cluster which is on the top of the whole country. The most special one is Yudelou which has a history of more than 200 years. This medium-sized round Tulou sits northwest facing southeast. On the back are green hills and the clear stream runs slowly in front of it. What is odd is that the latter half of the building has only one half-moon shape enclosing wall and it forms a marvelous spectacle "one half is high and other is low". Looking afar from the middle of the mountain, you will see it is like a graceful girl’s apron and that`s why it is called "Apron Building".
